12.Sudbury Waste (imaginesudbury.com)
Imagine a proper waste diversion program. Well in Sudbury, it appears that imagination is lacking when it comes to solid waste at the landfill. E-waste or computer waste is somehow getting into the landfill without a proper e-waste policy being implemented.
Today, at 9.10am I witnessed a Sudbury garbage truck (not a contractor) putting a computer monitor (CRT style) into the back of the truck then pulling the crusher lever. I was shocked, especially since I was under the impression that we were paying a provincial fee to help municipalities deal with e-waste. So you can imagine my horror after I called the city at 3-1-1 to enquire to what the policy was in regards to waste and e-waste.
The lady at the other end at 3-1-1 was very helpful, she took down the details. I was called back within 5 mins from the waste depot from a young sounding lad called B******. He informed me that they are not in the business to collect monitors from the curb, and that they can't tell if one is buried in a garbage bag. I informed him that it was bare waste on the foot path- it was not obfuscated and was clearly a monitor being put into the back of the truck and being crushed right there on the street.
So why are we paying these provincial fees when this goes on? Imagine what it would be like if everything went the way we believed it should.
